Description

The Illuminator Encyclopaedic Tibetan-English dictionary is regarded by most as the best Tibetan-English dictionary in the world. It has over 30,000 entries, with most of them having extensive explanations, making it truly an encyclopaedic dictionary.

This is the Windows version of the dictionary. Macintosh OSX, iOS, and online versions of this dictionary also are available. The OSX version is available in this shop. The iOS version is available through the Apple iTunes store—see the PKTC web-site for more information. An online version that works with an internet connection and browser is available by subscription, see the PKTC online dictionary web-site.

The dictionary continues to be developed and updates to it are available, usually at yearly intervals. See the software updates page on the PKTC web-site to find out what updates are available and to purchase the updates.

Our Windows Tibetan dictionaries are installed in two, separate forms: one in which all Tibetan text is shown as Tibetan transliterated into English and one in which all Tibetan text appears as native Tibetan script. Each of the two forms has its own icon on the desktop and each has its own entry in the Windows menuing system (look under Padma Karpo Translation Com in the Windows menuing system). If you are comfortable typing directly in Tibetan script under Windows then you can use the Tibetan script version of the dictionaries and if not, you can use the transliteration script version.

The OSX and iOS versions of the dictionaries have the Tibetan script and transliterated forms of the dictionaries bundled into one dictionary and you can type in either Tibetan script or transliterated script to do lookups.

A lengthy description of all of our Tibetan dictionaries can be seen here on our PKTC web-site, together with screen shots. And a very extensive presentation of all of our Tibetan software and fonts can be seen in this section of our PKTC web-site. In the latter section, you will see how on-the-spot lookups of Tibetan words in Tibetan texts can be done using our dictionaries, which is particularly valuable for anyone doing translation work.

Every single entry is bursting with experience and wisdom. It is hard to believe that such a vast and accessible resource has been compiled, and I'm so glad for any others that discover this wonderful gift.

5 of 5 Illuminator dictionary is the best January 15, 2019

My translation of the bslab pa kun las btus pa of Śāntideva has just appeared in print, published by Oxford University Press.  In reading the Tibetan versions of this text that I consulted, your dictionary was frequently very helpful; over and over again, I found it to be more insightful and more reliable than the Nitartha.  Thus, if anyone benefits from consulting my translation, some of the credit must go to your tireless efforts in preparing and maintaining the ITD.  For these, I thank you.

5 of 5 Illuminator dictionary is expertly created October 7, 2018
Reviewer: David Templeman from Melbourne, Australia
I have used the Illuminator Dictionary for several months now and am deeply impressed by the thoroughness of the entries and the subtle manner in which terms are dissected and defined. As with all languages there is no 'one-size-fits-all' definition and the Illuminator acknowledges this and offers alternate and contextualized readings wherever possible. This is certainly the best work of its type I have used and I congratulate Lama Tony Duff and his assistants on the seriousness with which they have approached this project.

Hands down The Illuminator is the best Tibetan-English dictionary on the planet.  I can't thank Tony enough for putting this together.  The quality of the work is phenomenal, nothing in the market is comparable.

Along with all the amazingly detailed standard entries, it also contains a complete and thorough explanation of ALL the Tibetan particles and how they work according to Tibetan grammar along with example sentences.  The amount of annotation he adds to each particle would definately fill a text book, so it also doubles as a kind of interactive  grammar book.

Worth every cent, don't waste your time with anything else, buy this dictionary, you will never regret it!

Note:  I'm a mac user, all of Tony's software runs perfectly with a small and inexpensive program called "crossover".
